Synopsis

In Focus is a truly groundbreaking, award-winning factual television series that transformed how disability was represented on British television. At a time when disabled voices were rarely centred, the series brought issues of disability into sharp focus, confronting the daily realities faced by disabled people with honesty, dignity, and impact.

The programme challenged long-standing barriers, stigma, stereotyping, and prejudice head-on, reshaping public perception and setting new standards for inclusive storytelling. In Focus did not merely raise awareness — it actively promoted positive, authentic representation and helped redefine how disability could and should be portrayed on screen.

More than a television series, In Focus became an essential information and support resource. It served disabled people, families, carers, service providers, and professionals working within the care sector, delivering clarity, guidance, and empowerment at a time when accessible, reliable information was scarce.

The series rigorously examined decisions made by those in positions of power across employment, education, training, service provision, and access to buildings and transport — ensuring accountability while encouraging progress.

In Focus also shone a light on opportunity and achievement, exploring routes open to disabled people and championing the support groups and organisations working tirelessly to protect rights, improve access, and drive social change.

Produced by Turning Point Productions — pioneers in disability awareness television — In Focus helped lay the foundations for a more inclusive broadcasting landscape. Although Turning Point Productions is now defunct, its influence endures: three members of the original team went on to found TwentyThree Studios, carrying forward the same commitment to bold, socially responsible storytelling.

The series’ lasting impact was recognised with the Millennium Commission’s Commedia Millennium Award, honouring its groundbreaking contribution to disability awareness, representation, and opportunity on British television.

Rosemarie Bruin

A central figure in the success of In Focus was Rosemarie Bruin, one of the founding members of Turning Point Productions and one of the programme’s two main presenters, alongside Glyn Spate. Passionate, articulate, and deeply committed to disability awareness, Rosemarie brought warmth, intelligence, and authenticity to every episode.

She was instrumental not only in front of the camera but also behind the scenes, helping to shape the ethos and direction of In Focus from its earliest days. She was very much loved by the entire production team, and her untimely death in 2013 was felt deeply by all who had the privilege of working with her. Rosemarie’s legacy lives on through In Focus and the lasting impact of the work she helped create.
